Many of us struggle with the concept of safe winter driving.

All we read about in articles tells us that driving safely in winter is a misnomer. Driving on roads is always dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth. In our seminars and online digital training I talk a lot about the myths of dangerous driving. Making sure we are training and skilled leads to a safe experience in winter. 

Many drivers consider themselves to be “good drivers” with no reference of what makes a good driver. They believe that they must be good at safe winter driving because they have never had an accident. Training and knowledge will develop skills required rather than simply good luck is . To be honest, a lot of good luck because if someone has been driving for a long time with no training, they likely have many bad habits.

So what does it take to experience driving safely in winter? Skill. Skill is a perishable commodity. If we don’t practice we will lose the skills we developed. Equipment is another big item on the list since the wrong equipment leads to a dangerous vehicle. 

Confidence can only be built on the foundations referenced above which includes training and ultimately a developed skill.
