DRIVING WHILE FATIGUED IS A SERIOUS ISSUE

Dangerous driving is a major issue around the world. Importantly fatigue is recognised as a major contributor to those road accidents statistics. It goes without saying that this is a serious threat to the safety of drivers, passengers and other road users. It is therefore important to recognise the signs of fatigue. Above all, take steps to prevent fatigue while driving.

Fatigue is a state of physical and mental exhaustion that can affect a person’s ability to perform tasks, including driving. It is caused by lack of sleep, long hours of work, stress, and other factors. It can lead to slower reaction times, impaired judgment, and increased risk of accidents.

Getting an adequate amount of sleep at night can mitigate the problem. As a result, you should aim for at least seven to eight hours of sleep the night before a long drive.

Take regular breaks. Plan to stop every two hours or so to stretch your legs so you can get some fresh air.

Avoid driving at night. Night-time driving can be more dangerous due to decreased visibility and increased fatigue.

Avoid drinking alcohol or taking medications that can make you drowsy.

Eat healthy snacks and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Play music or talk to a passenger to stay alert.
